Kenya gives you a genuine choice of backdrop in a way few countries can. Savanna, reef, lake, island, highland garden — all within a short flight of one another and all capable of holding a serious celebration.
What follows is organised by setting rather than by property, deliberately. The right venue within each of these areas depends on your guest numbers, your budget, and how much you want the location to do the work. We match specific properties to couples once we know those things. What is useful first is understanding what each setting is actually like to marry in.
The Maasai Mara
The most photographed choice, and the one that most often justifies itself.
A ceremony on the plains with the escarpment behind you is not something a venue can manufacture. Most camps will set up in open country at golden hour, and the light between four and six in the afternoon does more for the photographs than any amount of styling.
What the Maasai Mara asks of you is restraint on numbers. Camps are small by design, and flying guests in on light aircraft with 15kg baggage limits sets a natural ceiling. Twenty to forty guests is the comfortable range. Beyond that you are booking multiple camps and the day starts to fragment.
It also asks for a longer lead time than anywhere else on this list. Between July and October the camps that matter are committed a year ahead.
Best for: small guest lists, couples who want the landscape to be the whole design, anyone combining the wedding with a safari.
Diani and the south coast
Barefoot but formal, which is a harder combination to achieve than it sounds.
Diani gives you white sand, a fringing reef that keeps the water flat, and a run of properties built to hold events at scale. The practical advantages are real: road access, a nearby airstrip at Ukunda, and enough accommodation in one place that a hundred guests is not a logistical problem.
The thing to plan around is heat and tide. A midday ceremony on open sand is uncomfortable for everyone in formal dress. Late afternoon works, and the tide table decides how much beach you actually have, so the timings need to be set against it rather than against convenience.
Best for: larger guest lists, multi-day celebrations, couples who want guests to be able to make a holiday of it.
Lake Naivasha
The most underrated option and often the most practical.
Lake Naivasha is roughly ninety minutes from Nairobi by road, which changes the arithmetic entirely. Guests who cannot commit to a week can come for a weekend. Anyone flying in internationally arrives and is at the venue the same day without a domestic flight.
The setting is fever trees, open lawns running to the water, hippo audible at night, and the Rift Valley walls in the distance. There are working farms and lakeside estates here that hold large numbers comfortably, and the acacia canopy solves the shade problem that open savanna and open beach both have.
Best for: large Kenyan and regional guest lists, weddings where a meaningful proportion of guests are travelling from Nairobi, anyone who wants scale without a domestic flight.
Lamu
For couples who want the wedding and the holiday to be the same thing.
Lamu is a Swahili island town with no cars, coral-stone houses, dhows, and a pace that imposes itself on everyone who arrives. Celebrations here tend to spread across several days rather than concentrating into one, because that is what the place naturally does.
It is the most atmospheric setting on this list and the most demanding logistically. Everything arrives by boat. Guest numbers are limited by house capacity rather than function space, and suppliers are fewer. This is a setting for couples who find that appealing rather than alarming.
Best for: intimate numbers, multi-day celebrations, couples who want something that feels nothing like a hotel wedding.
Nairobi and the highlands
The option people overlook because it is close to home, and the one that solves the most problems.
Nairobi and the surrounding highlands hold private gardens, colonial-era estates, and conservancy properties within an hour or two of the city. Guests fly into Jomo Kenyatta and are at the venue that afternoon. Suppliers, florists, hire, and photographers are all local, which reduces cost and risk considerably.
The highland climate is the quiet advantage. Cool evenings, no humidity, and none of the heat management that a coastal or savanna wedding requires.
Best for: short lead times, mixed international and local guest lists, tighter budgets that still want a genuinely beautiful setting.
Choosing between them
Three questions settle it in most cases.
- How many people are coming? Above about sixty, the Mara and Lamu stop being practical. Below about twenty, Diani starts to feel oversized.
- How far are guests travelling, and how much can you ask of them? Every domestic flight you add reduces attendance.
- Do you want the location to be the design, or a backdrop to it? The Mara and Lamu are strongly the former. Naivasha and the highlands are more flexible.
Planning yours
The setting is the decision that constrains everything else, which is why it is worth taking time over and worth making first. Once it is chosen, the property, the suppliers and the timeline follow from it fairly naturally.
